dtf transfers

What are DTF transfers?

DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are a print method where full-colour artwork is printed onto a special film and then heat pressed onto a garment. The result is a soft-feel, vibrant print that sits on top of the fabric. It’s great for detailed logos, gradients, and short runs—with no setup costs or minimum order quantity.

How long do DTF transfers last?

DTF prints are very durable and flexible. They don’t crack or peel like older transfer methods and hold up well with regular wear and washing—especially when cared for correctly.

What fabrics can DTF transfers be used on?

DTF works on a wide range of garments including:

  • Cotton
  • Polycotton blends
  • Polyester

It's not ideal for:

  • Nylon
  • Waterproof or water-resistant fabrics
  • Coated or technical textiles

If you’re unsure, bring us your garment and we’ll check if DTF is suitable.

How do DTF transfers compare to screen printing?

DTF is better for:

  • Small to mid-size runs
  • Complex artwork
  • Multi-colour or gradient designs

Screen printing is better for:

  • Bulk orders
  • Simple designs
  • Bold, flat colours

We’ll help you choose the best method for your job.

How should I wash and care for garments with DTF transfers?

• Wash inside out
• Cold or warm water
• Avoid bleach and harsh detergents
• Line dry or tumble dry on low heat
• Do not iron directly over the design

Are DTF transfers good for small or one-off orders?

Absolutely! There are no setup fees, and pricing is based on design size—not volume. That makes DTF ideal for:

  • One-offs
  • Staff uniforms
  • Samples
  • Short runs under 25 units

How is DTF transfer pricing calculated?

Pricing is based on design size, not quantity. Common size categories include:

  • 100mm x 100mm
  • 200mm x 200mm
  • 300mm x 300mm

You can also use our online design tool to get an instant price estimate as you create your garment.

Are there any limitations to DTF transfer designs?

Not many! But:

  • Oversized prints may feel heavier
  • Very thick fabrics may reduce breathability
  • For massive or all-over prints, we might suggest sublimation instead

Can I use DTF transfers on dark garments?

Yes! DTF includes a white underbase layer that allows full-colour designs to pop on black or dark-coloured clothing.

How durable are DTF transfers compared to other methods?

They’re very durable. In many cases, DTF holds up just as well as screen printing or embroidery—especially when applied and washed correctly.

Can I use DTF transfers for fine detail and gradients?

Yes—this is one of DTF’s biggest strengths. It captures:

  • Fine lines
  • Tiny text
  • Photographic images
  • Smooth gradients

What is the turnaround time for DTF compared to other methods?

DTF is one of our fastest production methods. Since there's no setup or screen preparation, jobs often move through production quicker than embroidery or screen printing. However, turnaround still depends on our production queue—so let us know if you're on a tight timeline.

How and where are DTF transfers printed?

All of our DTF transfers are printed in-house using our state-of-the-art equipment. This ensures:

  • High print quality
  • Colour accuracy
  • Shorter lead times
  • Full control over your branding

Can I just buy the DTF transfers without getting them applied to garments?

Yes! If you have your own heat press or you’re a fellow decorator, you can buy ready-to-press DTF transfers from us. Just send us your artwork and size specs.
Note: We recommend a high-quality heat press for best results. We can’t guarantee the outcome if transfers are applied using untested equipment.

What is dye migration, and how can it be avoided?

Dye migration happens when dye from a garment (usually polyester) bleeds into the print—especially under heat. This can distort colours.
To prevent it:

  • We use premium transfer film and inks designed to minimise migration
  • For high-risk garments (like sublimated sportswear), we may recommend an alternate method like Supacolour Blocker

How does DTF Transfers compare to other Decoration Methods?

DTF is often the best choice for smaller runs and highly detailed designs, while methods like screen printing are more suited to bulk orders with simple designs. Our team will help you choose the best decoration method for your needs.
